The sustainability concept as we know it today dates to 1987 when it was used in the Brundtland Report, or the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development: our Common Future, produced by several countries for the United Nations.

Sustainability is often used interchangeably with ESG (E = Environmental; S = Social; G = Governance) – the three core pillars of sustainability. They constitute a set of actions and mechanisms that promote the long-term vitality or well-being of the enterprise.
